First Post for the Blog!

The Maynard Jackson Youth Foundation has been BUSY! On September 28, 2009, MJYF celebrated a turning point in its history with the announcement and kick off of a strategic partnership with The Leadership Center at Morehouse College. This partnership will combine the “brand name equity” of Morehouse College with MJYF and work to increase the visibility of the work and mission of both of our institutions. The partnership will allow our two institutions to share resources and work cooperatively to accomplish our shared goal of closing the opportunity gap for young, underprivileged students.

On October 10, 2009, MJYF took another step in expanding the reach of our Leadership Academy with the first MJYF class to meet at the TGI Friday’s on Camp Creek Parkway. The 18 new students were selected from South Fulton and Clayton County high schools. Several representatives from The Leadership Center at Morehouse were there to support the important occasion and to meet the new students. The five Skirball Scholar students from Morehouse and Spelman, who will be conducting various peer activities, were also on hand. Carole Anne Jackson, Maynard’s sister, and William “Bill” Clement, Maynard’s cousin and MJYF board member, were our guest speakers and talked with the new students about Maynard’s family legacy of educational achievement, political activism and ethical leadership in a module titled: “Maynard the Man”.
